“Mic check”, “MIC CHECK”!! Hundreds of people gathered in the united youth civil society organisations rally in the main lobby area of the International Convention Centre, home to the climate change negotiations for the past three weeks. The rally started at 3pm this afternoon and as I am blogging this, the rally still goes on. The rally took the United Nations Security by surprise and has just managed to contain the rally group in the middle of the lobby not allowing the group to march any closer towards the Open plenary room.
Some of the messages that were voiced by the group are “Don’t kill Africa”, “We can’t let the big polluters sign Africa and the world’s death sentence here in Durban”, and “Vulnerable countries are under immense pressure to sign off on a bad deal. They need to know that we stand united against inaction and injustice” and “Listen to the people, not the polluters”.
If there is one way to start of the last day of an open plenary on discussions on a climate change deal, a surprise rally is one way to do it, and if the major emitting countries are trying to ignore today’s messages I am sure that they are having a hard time trying to block out the noise within the plenary rooms.
Check out a few of the photos I managed to take in the middle of the rally at this link https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.10150409966495983.352805.709740982&…
and there is also a video. Keep a look out for the media stories because there were a large group of journalist most likely thankful that their news has gotten a little spicy before leaving for home.
